The short version
- Trimble announced it was buying Document Crunch, an AI contract and document review platform, in April 2026.
- In October, Document Crunch added drawings to its review, alongside contracts and specs, with source-linked answers.
- These tools are fast first reviewers. They don’t replace a construction attorney on the clauses that matter.
Contract risk usually hides in plain sight: a pay-if-paid clause, an aggressive indemnity, a schedule requirement buried in the specs. AI review tools are built to find those before you sign.
The deal and the new features
Trimble announced its purchase of Document Crunch on April 2. Document Crunch had been used on more than 10,000 projects by over 500 general contractors and construction managers. Trimble plans to make it the risk review layer across its Construction One suite.
On October 21, Document Crunch expanded to read construction drawings alongside contracts and specifications. Teams can search and question the full document set at once to find scope gaps and conflicting requirements, with citations back to the source. It’s available to all Document Crunch users. Procore’s contract review agent, launched in May, does similar work inside Procore.

What these tools catch
- Risky clauses such as indemnity, pay-if-paid, liquidated damages and notice deadlines.
- Conflicts between the contract, the specs and the drawings.
- Scope gaps where something is required but not clearly assigned.
- Requirements buried deep in a long spec book.
What they don’t replace
AI review is a fast first pass. It doesn’t know your relationship with the owner, your risk tolerance or your state’s law on a clause. Use it to build the list of issues, then have a construction attorney review the ones that carry real money or liability.
A good routine: run the AI review, have your project manager sort the findings, and send the short list to counsel.
Questions
Can AI tell me whether to sign a contract?
No. It can flag clauses and conflicts quickly, but whether to sign is a business and legal decision. Have an attorney review the important issues.
Do I need Trimble to use Document Crunch?
Document Crunch is still offered as its own platform, now as a Trimble company. Trimble plans to build it into its Construction One suite over time.
