Construction accounting is getting AI, one acquisition at a time

This fall, three moves pointed the same way: AI is coming to the back office of construction companies, mostly through deals between software vendors.

The short version

  • Sage bought Paperless Environments, which automates accounts payable for construction companies.
  • Oracle NetSuite announced AI agents that turn estimates into budgets and draft pay applications.
  • JDM Technology Group bought Dreeven and now owns more than 35 construction software companies. Ask your vendor what these deals mean for your data and your price.

Field software gets the headlines, but some of the most useful AI is landing in accounting: bills, pay applications, job budgets. Three announcements this fall show how it’s arriving.

Sage buys Paperless Environments

On October 1, Sage announced it had acquired Paperless Environments, a Baton Rouge company that automates accounts payable for construction. Paperless serves more than 1,400 customers in the U.S., Canada and Australia, and Sage customers already used its technology through Sage Paperless Construction. Sage framed the deal as connecting finance, project and field teams. Terms weren’t disclosed.

NetSuite launches construction AI agents

On October 26, Oracle NetSuite announced tools for construction businesses, including two AI agents:

  • Estimate Import Agent: turns an estimate into contracts, schedules of values and cost-coded job budgets, with links back to the source.
  • Payment Application Agent: prepares pay applications from verified progress, approved changes and retainage terms.

NetSuite says people still verify and approve before anything posts, and it hasn’t given pricing or a firm release date.

JDM keeps buying

JDM Technology Group closed its purchase of Dreeven, a Quebec jobsite management platform, on October 23. JDM now owns more than 35 construction software companies. Dreeven keeps its name and leadership, which is JDM’s usual approach.

What to ask your accounting software vendor

  • Which AI features are included in my plan, and which cost extra?
  • Does a person approve everything before it posts?
  • Where does my data go when your AI processes it?
  • If you were acquired, what changes for my contract and support?

Questions

Will AI post entries to my books on its own?

Not in these announcements. NetSuite says people verify and approve before anything posts. Ask any vendor how approvals work before you turn AI on.

Should I switch accounting software for AI?

Usually not. Start with the AI features your current system offers, and connect AI to it before you consider a switch.
